Key takeaways
- Structure and Written Expression is the most "learnable" section: the same rules come back again and again.
- Listening has short conversations, longer conversations and talks; listen for implied meaning.
- Reading tests main idea, detail, vocabulary in context, reference and inference.
- CEFR cut scores (ETS): A2 343, B1 433, B2 543, C1 620.
1. Know the sections
| Section | Questions | Time | Score range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening Comprehension | 50 | 35 min | 31–68 |
| Structure and Written Expression | 40 | 25 min | 31–68 |
| Reading Comprehension | 50 | 55 min | 31–67 |
| Total | 140 | about 2 hours | 310–677 |
2. Drill Structure and Written Expression
You have 25 minutes for 40 questions, so each rule must be automatic. Learn the patterns in Structure and Written Expression rules: subject–verb agreement, participle clauses, inversion, parallel structure, verb forms, comparatives and word form. Practise short daily sets and name the rule behind every answer.
3. Listen every day
- Short conversations: the answer is often a paraphrase or an implied meaning ("I wish I had…" = they didn’t).
- Longer conversations and talks: note the topic, the speakers’ purpose and any changes of plan.
- Check each mistake against a transcript and replay slowly.
4. Read one academic passage a day
Find the main idea of each paragraph, then answer detail, vocabulary-in-context, reference ("what does *it* refer to?") and inference questions from the text only.
