The overall band is the average of the four section bands rounded to the nearest 0.5: sections of 5, 4.5, 4.5 and 4 average 4.5, which is CEFR B2 and comparable to 86–94 on the old 0–120 scale. On the old scale, the total is simply the sum of four 0–30 section scores.

How the overall TOEFL band is calculated
ETS averages the four section bands and rounds the result to the nearest half band. Because every section is a whole or half band, the average always ends in .0, .125, .25, .375, .5, .625, .75 or .875: .125 and .625 round down, while .25, .375, .75 and .875 round up.

On the 2026 scale, the overall band is the average of the Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking bands (1–6), rounded to the nearest half band. On the old scale, the total is the sum of four 0–30 section scores, out of 120.
What is a good TOEFL score in 2026?
Many universities ask for an overall band of 4.5–5 (about 86–106 on the old scale, CEFR B2–C1). Check the exact minimum and any section minimums with your programme.
